CODDIWOMPLE

“To Travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination”

An Invitation to Coddiwomple: Discover the Path to Your Authentic Self

Life is an adventure—sometimes thrilling, sometimes uncertain, and often surprising. It’s a journey we navigate without a perfectly drawn map, guided instead by hope, determination, and the desire to find meaning and fulfilment.

Coddiwomple is a word that beautifully captures this essence: traveling purposefully toward an undefined destination. It’s about embracing the twists, turns, and detours that shape who we are and where we’re going. As a Registered Counsellor, I see coddiwompling as a powerful metaphor for the process of counselling itself.

When you step into a counselling space, you may have a destination in mind—a goal, a healing point, or a clearer sense of self. Yet, much like life, the counselling journey is rarely linear. Together, we will explore the uncharted territories of your mind, uncover hidden strengths, and discover perspectives you may never have considered.

The goal is not always to “fix” something or reach a predetermined point; instead, it’s about learning, growing, and navigating life’s uncertainties with mindfulness, resilience and clarity. With me as your companion, you’ll have a secure, supportive space to unpack challenges, embrace change, and step closer to your authentic self.

So, if you’re ready to embark on your own coddiwompling journey—one marked by purposeful exploration and profound self-discovery—I invite you to take that first step. Let’s travel together and see where the path leads.

Your destination might be undefined, but your growth and transformation is invaluable.

FINDING YOUR QUERENCIA

“Querencia is a place where you feel safe and at home, where you are your most authentic self; a place from which your strength is drawn”

Find Your Querencia: An Invitation to Rediscover and Defend Your Authentic Self

In the bullring, the querencia is where a bull feels most grounded and powerful—a sanctuary of safety and strength. But it is also so much more than a refuge. It’s where the bull takes its stand, defends its autonomy, and reclaims its personhood with unyielding determination.

Your querencia is no different. It’s the inner space where you feel most like yourself—authentic, resilient, and unapologetically you. Life’s challenges—loss, betrayal, failure—can shake your sense of stability and push you away from this core. Yet, like the bull in the ring, you have the power to rediscover your querencia, to kick up sand, and to charge forward with confidence and purpose.

But finding your querencia is not a straight path—it is a journey of coddiwompling. To coddiwomple means to travel purposefully toward an undefined destination, embracing uncertainty and trusting the process. The road to rediscovery often twists and turns, leading us through uncharted territories of self-reflection, unexpected challenges, and moments of profound growth. Together, we’ll navigate these complexities with purpose, treating every detour as an opportunity to build strength, clarity, and authenticity.

As your counsellor, I’ll be your steadfast ally on this journey. I’ll provide the tools, guidance, and support you need to stand firm in your autonomy, defend your personhood with the fierce determination of the bull, and uncover the extraordinary strength within you.

This is your invitation to embrace a kind of selfishness that prioritizes your well-being and a stubbornness that refuses to compromise your authenticity. Let’s unapologetically honour your journey, reclaim your truth, and face life’s challenges with courage and purpose.

Your querencia awaits. Are you ready to charge forward with purpose? Let’s take the first step together—let’s coddiwomple – “travel purposefully toward a vague destination”.

“If you don’t prioritise your Mental Health, at some stage your body might”

Understanding the Connection Between Mental and Physical Health: A Biopsychosocial Perspective

“If you don’t prioritize your mental health, your body might eventually send you a message.” The biopsychosocial model emphasizes that our health is not determined by just one factor. Rather, our physical health, mental well-being, and the environment we live in are all interconnected. The model suggests that it’s the interaction between these three components—body, mind, and environment—that leads to either health or illness. It’s crucial to understand that mental health is just as important as physical health, as the two are deeply intertwined.

This means that psychological factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression can have profound effects on physical health. Likewise, physical ailments and chronic conditions can worsen mental health, creating a cycle of ongoing challenges.

For instance, mental health conditions like depression can increase the risk of developing various physical illnesses. Studies show that people with depression are more likely to suffer from chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and even strokes (González et al., 2010). This connection highlights the importance of addressing mental health in order to prevent or manage physical illnesses.

When we experience stress, it impacts not only our body but also our thoughts, emotions, and behaviour. Stress is a common trigger for both mental and physical health problems. Over time, unmanaged stress can lead to serious health conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, obesity, and diabetes (Kivimäki et al., 2012).

There is an old saying, “As a man thinketh, so is he,” which highlights the power of our thoughts and mental state in shaping our overall well-being. What we think about ourselves and our lives can influence our physical health. By addressing and managing psychological issues like stress, anxiety, and depression, we can significantly improve our physical health and reduce the risk of chronic conditions. Taking care of our mental health is not just a luxury—it’s a necessity for our overall health.

We cannot claim health without mental health.

Mental health is a crucial component of overall well-being. Just as physical health is essential for our bodies, mental health is equally important for our minds and overall quality of life. When our minds are healthy, we are better equipped to navigate life’s challenges, build strong relationships, and experience greater fulfilment.

Mental well-being can be confusing at times, as it is often related primarily to different forms of pathology like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Bipolar Depression, Anorexia Nervosa, Borderline Personality Disorder, or other forms of more severe psychopathology like Schizophrenia. Not enough is said about the developmental formative years prior to maladaptive coping mechanisms becoming ridged, having been employed in an individual’s best attempt at coping within their environment. An environment often not conducive to optimum skills and schema development.  Little is said about the systemic causes that directly contribute to the development of mall adaptive coping mechanisms, disordered thinking and psychopathology.

Examples of these include but are not limited to the distress that is caused by entering a new career and being faced with imposter syndrome, without adequate self reflective skills to address the experience. Changing schools to a new environment with little to no support for adjustment to occur optimally. Picking the right course to study that will dictate your daily routine for the rest of your life. Preparing for exams while faced with personal difficulties in your home life, and being stuck in your emotional mind unable to retain information to the degree you would under more stable circumstances. Purchasing your first house in a volatile economy, and struggling with an increase in anxiety that wont subside. Finding out a spouse has been unfaithful, and contemplating if divorce is the only option as a result of indifference and resentment. Being emotionally or physically abused, and finding yourself unable to focus on attaining a path to safety. Losing a partner to death, or a child as a result of a miscarriage, and struggling to adjust to a new found reality. Losing your job, or wanting to come out to family members but fearing rejection to the point that you reject yourself and neglect your own needs. Becoming a parent and struggling to adjust to your new role, a lack of sleep, being the primary person responsible for another human beings optimum development and well being. Becoming burnt out from burning the candle at both sides, in order to keep up with the demands of life. Or receiving a terminal diagnosis, that causes you to question what the point was to any of it.

The list of life events that occur and cause severe discomfort is truly endless. When left unaddressed it often has a snowballing accumulative effect, where an individual capacity to manage increasingly deteriorates, resulting in fight or flight and the employment of more mall adaptive coping mechanisms or schemas. Mental well-being involves feelings, thoughts and behaviours that have a negative effect on an individual’s life. It results in changes in an individual’s mood, their perception of reality and their ability to organise and focus their thoughts. These are all signs of mental distress, and more often than not greatly affect an individual’s ability to function optimally at work, in relationships and within their communities. All of these can be addressed in psychological counselling, in the pursuit of balance and discovering your most authentic self.

You do not have to go at this alone, so don’t.

Bookings can be made by making contact with me directly via an sms, using the website contacting page, a whatsapp, an email or a phone call to my cell phone number.  Please note however that I will often be in consultation when you are trying to reach me, as such for your convenience there is an online booking platform available.

When opening the appointment calendar on the web page, you will have access to my diary and the dates and times that I have available for consultations.  Please note that for a booking to be secured the full consultation tariff would need to be paid.  In the event that an appointment would not be attended notice of cancelation has to be made 24 hours prior via the booking platform.

I'd like to share a testimonial from a valued colleague that has left me deeply humbled.

Gaston, a Psychodynamic Clinical Psychologist specialising in Gestalt counselling, wrote this review of my casework on my online profile and platform for Fitcy Health Dubai after consistent collaboration over several years:

“Cornelia is a confident, accountable, results-oriented, forward-thinking, and dependable counsellor registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and the Board of Healthcare Funders (BHF). With over 8 years of extensive experience in various counselling modalities, she has established a solid foundation in her field.

During the past 4 years, Cornelia has worked diligently in her private practice, taking a person-centred, systemic, eclectic approach to counselling, while challenging her clients’ views and ideas to solidify personal agency. She excels in communication and relates well to individuals at all levels. Cornelia is adaptable and works effectively both as part of a multidisciplinary team and independently.

A lifelong learner with a passion for research, Cornelia is inspired by the word “Coddiwomple,” which means to travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination. She sees life as a journey where individuals may have an initial direction but often find themselves shaped in unexpected ways, awakening new interests, goals, and beliefs.

Mindfulness, radical acceptance, and unconditional positive regard play crucial roles in Cornelia’s approach to counselling. She believes in full disclosure and absolute transparency, as she understands that “we cannot make alterations to things we don’t acknowledge.” Kindness is paramount in all her interactions, as she firmly believes that all behaviour, no matter how maladaptive, represents an individual’s best attempt at navigating their environment.

Cornelia is a keen observer of the various systems influencing individuals’ development, and she is convinced that there is nothing that cannot be remedied. Recognizing that each person’s journey and destination will be unique, she avoids external dictation and influence. Her aim is to support her clients as they navigate their paths towards their most authentic selves, providing a steady, supportive environment and fostering growth and insight every step of the way.”

I am truly honoured to have received such a positive testimonial from a respected colleague. It is a testament to my commitment to providing high-quality, personalized care to my clients.
